Renewed excitement radiates from the soul of NSW
The Tottenham Welfare Council is excited to announce it has secured funding for a March opportunity to share creative ideas for repurposing and upcycling exciting clothing and textiles.
In the latest round of NSW Country Arts Support Program (CASP) funding, Tottenham Welfare Council was granted $2555 for sustainable reuse activities ahead of the town’s annual community expo on March 14.
The workshop and exhibition will be conducted by Jane Milburn, a Brisbane-based upcycler and natural-fibre advocate who last year undertook a 365-day eco-clothing project to creatively reuse pre-loved clothing and textiles ( see www.sewitagain.com ).
Jane will provide a practical demonstration of ways she has refashioned existing garments, and participates will then be guided in garment surgery to creatively restyle garments from their wardrobes which they are no longer wearing.
The workshop series on March 12-13 will be supported by an exhibition of garments upcycled for the Saw It Again project, which will be open to the public to spark the imagination and consider what might be possible in the refashion space.
Following the workshops, the Upcycled exhibition will pop-up at Tottenham Expo and an eco-fashion parade will showcase local refashion creations and Sew it Again garments.
The Tottenham Welfare Council plans to extend the upcycling theme by running a ‘Waste to Art’ competition, which will be judged by Jane as part of Expo activities.
Welfare Council member Zsimone Berryman said: “The support and encouragement from CASP and Arts Out West has been invaluable to us as a committee, and we are very excited to be able to bring Jane Milburn to Tottenham.”
